Black gum has a straight trunk and rounded crown. White flowers appear in spring and are a nectar source for pollinators, and birds visit the tree to feed on the small insects it attracts. Flowers give way to dark blue fruits that are attractive to birds. Fall foliage is scarlet, yellow and orange.
Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, acidic soils. Tolerates poorly-drained soils and can grow in standing water.
