Ornamental kale is a cool-weather annual that needs cool temperatures to produce the best leaf colors. Foliage remains attractive well into fall, including through several frosts. Depending on temperatures, plants may survive until mid-winter.
Plant ornamental kale in full sun to part shade with well-draining soil. Keep soil consistently moist but avoid soggy conditions, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings once established. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting, with light feedings once or twice during the season. No pruning is needed; simply remove yellowing leaves to keep plants tidy.
