Container Recycling with Prides Corner Farms
There has been an underlying theme over the past decade of how do we make the Green Industry more green. While we have been making conscious strides towards sustainability, in 2021 we decided to tackle plastic pot recycling!
In conjunction with Nursery and Landscape Associations from Vermont, Maine and Connecticut, we developed a system that allows us to collect and recycle used containers from garden centers.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- Pick up locations are established around each state to make it feasible for everyone involved to participate most efficiently.
- By sorting the containers by type of plastic, #2 and #5, prior to us picking them up, we are able to close the recycling loop with East Jordan Plastics who uses them to manufacture new containers.
- The associations also help spread the word and getting more companies involved in the program. While not required, the associations have included this as being a member benefit, attracting more companies to join.
Moving forward
- We are looking forward to discussing benefits and implementation with other state associations, including Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
- Collaboration with our partner nurseries around the country has already begun so they can expand this service to their area.
