Actaea rubra, commonly known as red baneberry, is a bushy perennial with short, thick stems reaching 1 to 3 feet in height. It features dense, rounded clusters of small white flowers that create a feathery appearance due to their prominent stamens. The plant produces striking red berries that are attractive but poisonous.

Grow Actaea rubra in part or full shade and moist, rich soils. It will be happy in the shade of conifers or deciduous trees but will have more flowers if morning or afternoon sun is available. Baneberry benefits from allowing leaf litter to remain at the base or mulching with composted leaves. A late fall cutback is not necessary for the plant, but it will tidy up the garden for winter.
