Photinia × fraseri is an evergreen hybrid shrub known as "red tip" for its vibrant red new leaves in spring. It has dark green, leathery, elliptic leaves that gradually turn glossy green. Small, white, fragrant flowers bloom in late April, followed by red pome fruit that persists into winter. Regular pruning encourages additional red growth throughout the year.
Photinia × fraseri thrives in well-drained soils with medium moisture and prefers full sun to part shade. It tolerates full shade but may have fewer flowers and be more prone to leaf spot disease. Once established, it's somewhat drought-tolerant. For best results, plant in areas with good air circulation. Prune in winter to thin for better airflow and again in spring after the red growth fades to encourage new red growth.
