Prune butterfly bush only after new growth has begun to emerge in spring. It may take several weeks to appear, so be patient and resist the urge to prune sooner. Plant butterfly bush in full sun and very well-drained soil: wet soil, particularly winter and early spring, may cause root rot. Avoid fall planting in USDA zones 5 and 6.
