History shows that landscapers, designers, and homeowners can’t resist the allure of a white bark birch. AVALANCHE™ birch will no doubt provide that same draw, combining exceptional smooth white bark with a ruggedness and durability that withstands challenging conditions and resists bronze birch borer. Bark starts out tan, takes on pink tones and then turns that bright, stunning white. Neat emerald green leaves develop golden fall color. Imported from Japan by Ohio’s renown Storrs & Harrison Company in the mid-late 1800s.

Growing & Maintenance Tips for Betula x Avalanche™

Plant in full sun with 6+ hours of sunlight per day.

Prefers moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soils. However, crabapples can tolerate varied conditions as long as they aren’t too extreme.

Average water needs, some drought tolerance once established.

If desired, fertilize in early spring using a granular (not liquid) fertilizer formulated for woody plants, like a rose or tree fertilizer. One application a year is sufficient in most areas. However, if you are starting with a very small plant, you may wish to fertilize monthly through late July to encourage more rapid growth.

Little needed. You may selectively prune out branches to achieve a desired shape and habit if you wish, but regular pruning is neither required nor recommended.
